Why hire a local photographer for your Scottish elopement?
There’s a reason more and more couples are choosing to elope among the spectacular landscapes of Scotland – the unparalleled sense of adventure, the beautiful culture, the endless opportunities to see sights that will leave your jaw on the floor… You get the vision.
But with this rise in popularity often comes a lack of knowledge on the part of photographers who don’t live here/didn’t grow up here; who aren’t familiar with the nooks and crannies that can only come with a lifetime of exploring these landscapes. Scotland is perceived as ‘bucketlist destination’ for destination wedding/elopement photographers. If you post in an international FB group for photographers, saying you are eloping in Scotland, you will be inundated with messages and comments from people who want to tick Scotland off their list despite having no/minimal experience of actually being in Scotland. (Which is absolutely wild!)
In this guide, I’ll be sharing with you the 10 reasons why you should hire a local photographer for your Scottish elopement – and why it’ll make a world of difference for your unforgettable day.

Benefits of hiring a local photographer for your Scottish elopement
1. Land laws and permit expertise
Figured we’d kick this off with an important one that is always close to our hearts. We’re beyond privileged to call Scotland our home and be able to work out in nature freely, which is why we do everything we can to minimise our impact on these beautiful lands. Scotland’s nature is incredibly important to our work (and our wee hearts!), and we bring that into every elopement we photograph.
Knowledge of land laws and permit regulations is essential to planning your Scottish elopement, and ensuring we don’t explore past our bounds. We have Right to Roam freedoms – which, if you’re unfamiliar, means that hikers can essentially enjoy all Scottish lands and waters freely and responsibly – but some landowners still charge a permit for ceremonies. It’s hard to know about this without experience and local knowledge, so don’t worry; we’ll have this part handled!
This also means Leaving No Trace, respecting regeneration areas & boundaries, and not geo-tagging sensitive or quiet areas when we post on social media. Did you know we even plant a tree in the Scottish Highlands for every couple we work with – to help re-wild our ancient Caledonian rainforest?
2. Safety and comfort in all weather
Safety should always be the top priority during your adventure elopement (or anytime you’re exploring out in the wilderness). This is why hiring locals who are familiar with seasonal weather conditions is key – Scotland is notorious for having four seasons in a day, and we consider it a part of our job to keep our couples comfortable in any environment. We also know what terrain is safe and what is not, in different conditions – thanks to our deep knowledge of the land and the amount of time we’ve spent exploring it through the years.
Rain or shine, dreich or sunny, windy or calm, we know how to take care of you and ensure a smooth, stress-free day of adventure no matter what Mother Nature may bring. We believe in working with the weather – not against it – so you may catch us asking you to do a wee dance in the rain before we run to the nearest trees to take cover…

3. Avoiding tourist hotspots
It’s safe to assume that you’d rather not exchange your vows or smother each other in kisses in front of a giant crowd… unless you’re into that, then we’ll cheer you on! But if you’d prefer to enjoy a wee bit of peace and quiet during these intimate, heartfelt moments together, then you need a photographer by your side who knows how to avoid tourist hotspots – or when to enjoy them at their quietest.
Unfortunately, it’s not always as easy as eloping on a weekday or on what you think is an off-the-beaten-path trail… geo-tagging and social media virality have made even the most hidden of treasures grow quickly in popularity, so it’s imperative you know how to time your ceremony right.
4. Avoiding other elopers
Just as useful as avoiding tourists is having the skills to avoid other elopers. There’s a chance you may run into another couple (or two) eloping in the same spot as you without proper planning – but with the right photographer by your side, you’ll know exactly when to elope for maximum privacy. We even have a local Facebook group of photographers and suppliers where we coordinate -especially in Glencoe and Skye- to avoid ceremony clashes!
5. Familiarity with Scottish lighting
Photographers who are not local to Scotland may not know that Scottish light just hits different. When I travelled to New Zealand and photographed there, I felt like a new photographer all over again, trying to figure out how to get the best out of their light. Everywhere has different light qualities – and Scotland sunlight is EXTRA bright, like the lumens are up to max. Knowing how to harness this harsh light takes a lot of practice and lived experience, and knowing how to manoeuvre it to your advantage at any time of day, during any season, in any weather, is a skill in itself.
6. Flexibility and backup plans
Eloping can be a bit unpredictable and a wee bit daunting (especially if you’re eloping from another country). But having a deep knowledge of the area and conditions means that a Plan B isn’t hard for us – we’re still able to give a great experience even when we have to pivot for whatever reason. In all honesty the only thing you can truly count on on your elopement day is that plans will change some way, some how. All you can do is be prepared to adapt and go with the flow of the day as it comes!
We promise you’ll be supported every step of the way by a pair of Scotland elopement nerds. We’ll make sure you feel fully prepared for your elopement, from understanding your chosen location, coping with bad weather, what to pack, etc. so that on the day of, you can rest easy. We come extremely well prepared to make sure we can navigate anything unexpected or challenging with confidence.
7. Cultural respect and connection
A huge part of why we do what we do is because of our love and passion for Scottish heritage. Dave and I actually met through a community dedicated to keeping Celtic heritage and rituals alive. I grew up here, I understand and respect the importance of certain cultural traditions and rituals, and I can help you navigate that. Dave and I share our knowledge with the couples we work with so you can have a deeper connection to the land you’ll elope on, and empower you to honour our ancient rituals too (if you wish to!).

8. Access to a local’s breadth of knowledge
Having access to the breadth of knowledge of a Scottish native is something you cannot put a price on. As a native, I can share insights about what the ‘real’ Scotland is like – what it’s like to grow up here, to experience and connect with the culture, etc.
We all love the Outlander version of Scotland that is easily romanticised, but it’s not very realistic 99% of the time. It’s important to be able to set expectations properly – to lay out the pros and cons of every decision you make along the way. This isn’t possible with desktop research, as helpful as Google can surely be with parts of the planning process! Being honest and setting realistic expectations for your day is one of our core values – no nasty surprises.
I’m also one of the very few elopement photographers who grew up in Scotland and knows the lands, the people, and the culture inside and out. You can count on me to point you to all the best local suppliers (and who to avoid), share all the hidden gems I’ve found exploring Scotland in my own free time, and pass along my passion for these breathtaking landscapes!
9. Strong network of local photographers
Working with a local means working with someone who has a strong, trusted network of Scotland elopement friends nearby who are ready to answer the call for help should it arise. This means that, fate forbid anything should happen and we can’t attend your elopement (like, say, a global pandemic virus), we have talented friends who are willing to step into our shoes and treat your day with the same level of care and attention as we do.
10. Ability to capture the landscapes cinematically
Last but certainly not least, locals know how to capture the heart of Scotland’s landscapes better than any traveller or tourist ever could. There’s something special about growing up amidst these landscapes, exploring them throughout the years and watching them evolve over time, that adds an extra layer of magic to every photograph. We know how to document the land in an enchanting, cinematic way no matter the weather, season, time of day, light, or vibe you’re going for… and how to give you the dramatic Scotland elopement photos you’ve been dreaming of.
