hot tub celebration at roulotte retreat, Scotland

Adventure at Roulotte Retreat Scotland | Rowells

Birthdays are a great excuse to get away and spend time together. For Dave’s birthday this year I surprised him with a little weekend adventure trip to the gorgeous vintage caravans at Roulotte Retreat near Melrose, Scotland. Mom and Dad pitched in to access the Japanese eco hot tubs which made the whole experience 10x better (thank you!). Though these trips do come with one small condition – Dave’s gotta be part of a photoshoot, haha! (He is the most patient man in this world.)

Enjoying the rare Scottish sun we passed most of our time soaking in the tub, listening to audiobooks, cooking food and drinking champagne. Ah, blissful.

On Saturday, we spent the day at Melrose, a stunning Scottish Borders town – roaming around the beautiful abbey, checking out the independent shops and eating ice cream. On the way back to camp, we were roadblocked by the GIGANTIC chickens and cockerels at the farmhouse. After much hilarity involving me failing to round up them to let the car through, we were straight back in that tub.

I love how many quirky accommodation options Scotland has – from castles, to brochs, to bothies, to coastal huts – I’m slowly working my way through this website! Last year, we spent time at the Beermoth vintage fire truck at Inshriach House. What’s your fave alternative retreat location?
